June 2010

I interned at the Austin American-Statesman 4 years ago, and I've been freelancing them for the past few years... this summer they took me on as a temp staffer for 2 months while a few of the photogs were out of the office. Here's a look at the first month!

Leslie Luciano has breast cancer and a week after her second surgery she passed through the airport with bandages and plastic tape all over her body. Luciano spoke with the airport screeners ahead of time and they said it would be okay but they ended up doing an inch by inch search of her body that humiliated and traumatized her. The Senior Retreat happens every Friday at the Northwest and the Town Lake YMCA and is geared towards seniors who have early to midstage Alzheimer's and dementia. Without needing a YMCA membership, participants can pay $20 a month for a weekly program that enhances socialization, keeps up with their memory skills through games and some includes fitness through the form of swimming, dancing, and aerobic. The Town Lake program run from 11-2 pm and the Northwest program is from 1-3pm.
